Prepare for a storm — snowstorm you say? Try firestorm. With the Canadiens next playing in Anaheim on Wednesday, there will be three full days to dissect tonight’s game and any ramifications coming from the league office.
It was a new season and fans were brimming with optimism. Their beloved Canadiens were full of promise — favorites Max Pacioretty and Josh Gorges were welcomed back into the fold. Erik Cole was added as the big power-forward that had been missing from the top-six for many years.
Brutal. Just brutal.
At the conclusion of a game where the Canadiens looked like a team that will be sitting on the sidelines come April, I had this short exchange with Canadiens prospect Morgan Ellis.
The Canadiens couldn’t add to their pre-season win total on Monday night but there was something positive that the Bell Centre faithful took away from the game.
Scott Gomez was the target for criticism by fans last season, mostly deserved, for a dreadful performance. Andre Kostitsyn is a perennial target for the media, and that often has very little to do with his play on the ice. But both have provided cover for Mike Cammalleri, who despite a sub-par year in 2010-11 emerged relatively unscathed.
On March 5th of this year, Max Pacioretty scored twice against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Habs won the game 4-2 and Pacioretty was named first star at the St. Pete Times Forum. The young Canadiens power-forward was in a groove with 11 points in 14 games.
Today the anticipation was driven to a fever pitch — one mainstream reporter described the mood in the Bell Centre as a “playoff atmosphere.” Was he embellishing? No, it’s been a long summer prompting hockey-starved fans in Montreal to nod and say “That’s about right.”
